Hyssop

Ornamental Features:

Hyssop's fragrant oval leaves remain forest green in colour throughout the season. It features beautiful spikes of lightly-scented powder blue flowers rising above the foliage in mid summer, which are most effective when planted in groupings. The flowers are excellent for cutting. The fruit is not ornamentally significant.

Landscape Attributes:

Hyssop is an herbaceous perennial with an upright spreading habit of growth. Its relatively fine texture sets it apart from other garden plants with less refined foliage.

This perennial will require occasional maintenance and upkeep, and is best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season. It is a good choice for attracting butterflies to your yard. Gardeners should be aware of the following characteristic(s) that may warrant special consideration;

Plant Characteristics:

Hyssop will grow to be about 24 inches tall at maturity, with a spread of 18 inches. It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 5 years.

This perennial does best in full sun to partial shade. It is very adaptable to both dry and moist locations, and should do just fine under typical garden conditions. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. This plant can be propagated by seed.
