Ornamental Features:
Lemon Balm's attractive fragrant pointy leaves emerge light green in spring, turning green in colour throughout the season. It features dainty lightly-scented white flowers along the stems in late summer. The fruit is not ornamentally significant.
Landscape Attributes:
Lemon Balm is an herbaceous perennial with an upright spreading habit of growth. Its medium texture blends into the garden, but can always be balanced by a couple of finer or coarser plants for an effective composition.
This perennial will require occasional maintenance and upkeep, and is best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season. Plant Characteristics:
Lemon Balm will grow to be about 3 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 5 feet. It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 10 years.
This perennial does best in full sun to partial shade. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. It is not particular as to soil pH, but grows best in sandy soils. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. This plant can be propagated by division.
