Scotch Pine (pom pom)
Description
Height: 15 feet
Spread: 10 feet
Hardiness Zone: 3
Other Names: Scots Pine
Description:
An ornamental variation of scotch pine with interesting clumped needle growth; this tree must be kept pruned to maintain the pom pom puff effect but is well worth it for the exotic element it will add to your garden
Ornamental Features:
Scotch Pine (pom pom) has attractive bluish-green foliage. The needles are ornamentally significant but remain bluish-green through the winter. Neither the flowers nor the fruit are ornamentally significant.
Landscape Attributes:
Scotch Pine (pom pom) is an open evergreen dwarf tree with an upright spreading habit of growth. Its relatively fine texture sets it apart from other landscape plants with less refined foliage.
This is a relatively low maintenance dwarf tree. When pruning is necessary, it is recommended to only trim back the new growth of the current season, other than to remove any dieback. Deer don't particularly care for this plant and will usually leave it alone in favor of tastier treats. It has no significant negative characteristics.
Scotch Pine (pom pom) is ideal for use as a garden accent or patio feature, and is recommended for the following landscape applications;
- General Garden Use
- Accent
Plant Characteristics:
Scotch Pine (pom pom) will grow to be about 15 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 10 feet. It tends to be leggy, with a typical clearance of 3 feet from the ground, and should be underplanted with lower-growing perennials. It grows at a slow rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 50 years or more.
This dwarf tree should only be grown in full sunlight. It prefers dry to average moisture levels with very well-drained soil, and will often die in standing water. It is considered to be drought-tolerant, and thus makes an ideal choice for a low-water garden or xeriscape application. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments.
This is a selected variety of a species not originally from North America.
