The beauty of these free standing structures is that it creates a usable space in weather conditions that are less courteous. 

There is really no limit to what can be done for stand alone structures. It is only limited by your imagination. Why not a pergola for your wedding? Or a gazebo for the back yard? A covered deck or pergola to block the summer sun? A pavilion for a municipal park area?  Or a structure within a room to add to interior form?

Timber frame free standing structures are unique: they use joinery methods as far back as the roman world, show the skeleton of a structure rather then sheeting it in, and they are an art form that can be unique from timber frame structure to timber frame structure.
