The tradition of having metal buttons on the sleeves of men’s blazers owes its origins to the King of Prussia. Having outfitted his soldiers with expensive uniforms, he wished to discourage them from the habit of wiping their sweaty faces on their sleeves. He found that having a row of metal buttons sewn onto the cuff served as an effective deterrent.
